Company History

Our company’s history dates back to 1957 with the establishment of the National Oil and Gas Trust (OKGT). Since then, the organization has undergone numerous structural changes. MB 2001 Ltd.'s predecessor, Kőolajkutató Rt. (Petroleum Exploration Co.), played a significant role in shaping the history of Hungary's oil and gas industry.

The former Petroleum Exploration Enterprise in Szolnok was pivotal in the development of Hungary’s oil industry, operating with a total of 47 drilling and workover rigs. The company was a pioneer in oil and natural gas exploration, discovery, and production while conducting geological surveys, developing innovative drilling technologies, and training professionals for the Hungarian oil sector.

The enterprise’s efforts were crucial in uncovering Hungary’s hydrocarbon reserves, both conventional and unconventional. Its mission included identifying potential drilling sites and developing efficient extraction methods, which significantly improved the efficiency and scale of the country’s oil production. These efforts contributed to Hungary’s energy independence and industrial growth.

Over the years, the institute collaborated with numerous domestic and international organizations, sharing its expertise and experience while serving as an innovation hub for the oil industry. It tested and introduced new technologies and methods that continue to influence the industry today.

The company provided stable employment and training opportunities for more than 3,000 Hungarian professionals, bolstering the local economy and supporting the development of Szolnok. While the original enterprise no longer operates in its initial form, its legacy lives on through MB 2001 Ltd., whose impact can still be felt today through the expertise of Hungarian oil industry professionals and technological advancements.
